Words are things; and a small drop of ink
Falling like dew upon a thought, produces
That which makes thousands, perhaps millions, think.
Lord Byron 1788-1824

Movies

Zulu
"The Zulu wars of the 1880s are well after our period, but the movie approaches cult status and is well worth watching. Stellar performances by the cast, including Michael Caine. A real Brit stiff upper lip movie with lots of Redcoats (and millions of Zulus) in battle. Stirring stuff!" Graeme Marsden

The Patriot (2000)
"Highly predictable chestnut: Hero is wronged, fights back, gets girl, fights one and one with the bad guy in the last frames - this must actually qualify to be the commonest movie plot ever.
Bad points (there are so many!) implausible plot, dumb dialog, manipulation of historical facts. Good points: it's an entertaining potboiler. Uniforms are well researched (even if artillery and dragoons are wearing red coats!) and some great battle scenes featuring many reenactors. Mel Gibson is likeable, if wooden." Graeme Marsden

The Madness of King George (1994)
"Really puts you in to the royal court levee of the period. Outstanding theatrical performances." Graeme Marsden.

Military museums are the largest group of specialist museums in Britain. With some two hundred of these, Britain has the largest number of military museums in the world. The history of military collecting dates from the seventeenth century and this book examines the origins of military museum collections and describes how military history 1660-1900 is portrayed in them. Included are discussions of the inherent problems in portraying warfare; the social history of the serviceman, his family and camp followers; the relationship between the armed forces and civilian populations; and the role of museum archives and questions of educational provision.

"I got started way back when I was a little nipper, with the
National
Geographic book on the American Revolution
,
though done in the 60's its a
good, very well illustrated (with photos of sites/artifacts/portraits)
overview of the revolution, the premise being that a family follows the
events of the revolution and travels to the places, roughly in order. It
definitely was one of the books that got me started and I'd be happy to lend
my well worn copy." Mary Stone.
